Happy Pride Month! Pride is a time of celebration, reflection, and recognition of the many identities, experiences, and contributions that make up the LGBTQIA+ community. It is also a time to honor the resilience, courage, and advocacy of those who came before us—individuals whose sacrifices and achievements helped build the foundation for the rights, visibility, and sense of community that many LGBTQIA+ people experience today.

While Pride is often associated with celebration, it also serves as an important reminder of the ongoing need to create and sustain affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Acceptance is more than a social ideal; it is a powerful protective factor that promotes positive mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Research continues to demonstrate the profound impact that supportive environments can have on LGBTQIA+ people, particularly youth. According to The Trevor Project's 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, LGBTQ youth who live in communities that are accepting of LGBTQ people reported significantly lower rates of suicide attempts than those living in less accepting environments. These findings highlight an important truth: when we cultivate affirming homes, schools, workplaces, faith communities, and social spaces, we reduce harm, foster belonging, and, in many cases, help save lives.

Creating affirming environments benefits everyone. When people are able to live authentically and feel respected for who they are, communities become stronger, healthier, and more connected.

How Can You Build an Affirming Space?

This is not an all-inclusive guide, but it is a meaningful place to start. Small actions can have a significant impact, and creating affirming environments is an ongoing process of learning, listening, and growth. If you are interested in expanding your knowledge and advocacy efforts, consider exploring resources from PFLAG, an organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals, families, and allies through education and advocacy.

Here are a few ways to help create affirming spaces:

1. Use people's correct names and pronouns. Respecting how someone identifies is a simple yet meaningful way to demonstrate dignity, respect, and inclusion.

2. Be mindful when asking personal questions. Curiosity is natural, but not every aspect of someone's identity, relationship, or medical journey is information you are entitled to know. Respect personal boundaries and privacy.

3. Commit to lifelong learning. Language, understanding, and community needs evolve over time. Approach conversations with openness, humility, and a willingness to learn from others' experiences.

4. Be an advocate and ally. Support policies, organizations, and conversations that promote equity, acceptance, and inclusion. Advocacy can take many forms, from speaking up against discrimination to supporting local LGBTQIA+ initiatives and events.

Celebrating Pride in Frederick

Pride Month reminds us that we are stronger when we support one another and celebrate the diversity that enriches our communities.

Frederick Pride begins on June 26, but events take place throughout the month and include music, food, community gatherings, a festival and parade, youth and adult programming, educational events, and much more. Whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, an ally, or someone looking to learn more, there are many opportunities to connect, celebrate, and show support.

Pride exists outside of June and cultivating inclusive spaces helps mitigate discrimination, strengthens interpersonal relationships, and builds a more equitable and productive community for everyone, helping us to create a future that respects and supports all individuals.
